Recently, a number of Gravity Fitness clients took part in the Rock N Roll 10k or half marathon in Dublin. With three distances available over the weekend (5k, 10k or half marathon), ten clients including Conor (Gravity coach) took part in the 10k and 5 people including myself (Gareth, owner of Gravity Fitness) took part in the half marathon.
At Gravity we encourage our clients to attend to the gym three days a week, which includes a combination of mobility, stability, movement preparation and strength with a top up of the aerobic and anaerobic system in a single 50-minute session. Within the three gym sessions, we encourage our clients to add an aerobic session to their weekly schedule to help achieve the results they want (with good nutrition habits playing a key role). We have found the clients who attend 3 gym sessions a week and add in an aerobic run once a week are in a far stronger position to achieve the results they want. Aerobic outdoor running is not just great for improving your fitness but also has a great impact on your mind and brain function. Recent research has shown that aerobic running can indirectly improve mood, sleep and reduces stress and anxiety. Problems in these areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment.
With setting a challenge to clients, such as the 5/10k events it commits them to train more in the coming twelve-week period. With committing to a challenge, you have more chance of achieving the results you want, you are more motivated and concentrated toward something so you have less chance of failure.
Benefits with combining strength and aerobic fitness:
- Improves cardiovascular health
- Lowers blood pressure
- Helps regulate blood sugar
- Aids sleep
- Regulates weight
- Improves brain power
- Boosts mood
- Reduces risk of falls
